Cutting-edge procedures allow us to give your pet the best possible care.
Diagnostics
Accurate diagnosis of a problem is the key to offering effective treatment , whether medical or surgical. That's why at CAH we strive to stay current in our knowledge as well as our technology.
Radiology & Ultrasonography
Properly positioned, detailed images are essential in giving our doctors the information needed to accurately interpret x-rays and sonograms of your pets. Our well-trained technicians use a high-speed x-ray machine and computerized processor to produce excellent quality x-rays.
Most of our ultrasound studies are done by a board-certified radiologist whose expertise gives us a distinct advantage in the accurate diagnosis of heart and abdominal problems.
CAH is certified to perform PennHip x-ray evaluations for hip dysplasia in dogs as young as 16 weeks of age. PennHip is recognized by board-certified surgeons as the gold standard for predicting the likelihood of developing hip joint problems.
In-House Laboratory
Our advanced lab allows us to test blood, urine and other samples – accurately and within minutes. When your pet is sick, time is critical. A rapid diagnosis allows treatment to begin as soon as possible, improving your pet's chances for a good outcome and saving you time and expense.
Anesthesia and Surgery
The standards for safe, comfortable surgery improve every year. Here are just a few of the factors to consider when choosing who to trust when your pet needs surgery:
Thorough pre-surgical exam and review of procedures to be done.
- Blood-screening to assess organ function and assure maximum safety.
- Pre-medication with appropriate sedatives and analgesics to control anxiety and comfort.
- The most up-to-date anesthetics are used so pets of all ages can be safely anesthetized.
- Warm air circulating blankets to maintain our small patients warmth and comfort.
- Pulse oximetry to monitor blood oxygen levels throughout the surgery.
- CO2 monitor gives an early alert to any changes in respiration.
- EKG monitor alerts us to any unlikely changes in heart function.
- Body temperature monitor allows us to regulate your pet accurately.
While spaying, neutering and declawing are performed routinely, our surgeons also have extensive experience in orthopedic, gastrointestinal, urological, ear/nose/throat, oncologic and other complex surgery .
Laser and electrosurgery offer a significant decrease in post-operative bleeding and pain.
Hip Dysplasia Prevention
A procedure called JPS (juvenile pubic symphysoidesis) provides the opportunity to help prevent hip dysplasia in breeds which are prone to this debilitating disease. This minimally invasive procedure is done at 16 weeks of age along with spaying or neutering. Please call for details.
Brachycephalic Syndrome
Short-nosed dogs like bulldogs, pugs and Boston terriers benefit greatly from surgery to correct narrow nostrils and elongated soft palate (brachycephalic syndrome) which restrict oxygen, create abnormal pressures in the airways and may lead to airway collapse as they get older.
Orthopedics
Dr. Earl Mummert has 30 years of special interest in orthopedic diagnosis, treatment and surgery .
If extremely complex problems are found, we will also offer the services of a board-certified surgeon who has supported CAH for over 25 years.
Oncology
Oncology services including the diagnosis of many cancers, palliative treatments to control pain, surgical removal of tumors and chemotherapy are available – compassion is standard care.
Intensive Care Unit
The Intensive Care Unit at CAH is situated right in our busiest workspace, so our pre- and post-surgical and critical care patients are always under direct supervision. Intravenous pumps, temperature monitoring and control, pulse oximetry, oxygen therapy, blood pressure monitoring, transfusion supplies, etc. help us to manage most serious conditions.
Pain Management
Pain management is always a high priority at CAH . Many medical and surgical conditions can lead to discomfort. We use a variety of analgesics to keep your pets as comfortable as we'd like to be ourselves. Medications from mild sedatives to potent narcotics are used judiciously in the form of pills, skin patches, local anesthetics, IV infusions, nerve blocks and more. |
